amd athlon 750mhz
placa de vidio gforce4400
som c-media
I tried Piapara LiveCD on 3 different computers, and none of them starts properly.
The first one is an Acer Revo with Intel Atom and Nvidia ION.
Result:
It seems to boot properly, then resolution changes and all I see is a black screen.
The same on a different machine with Athlon XP 2600.
On an Athlon 64 machine with ATI Radeon, it booted ans dhowed some message that seemed to include the graphics board name "ATI bla bla bla" then the system throws some more messages /which I can't read because the screen area seems to be larger than the actual screen) and the system shuts down.
For the generation of the Live CD I only used standard options.
NVIDIA Ion is not supported.
But your other configuration with athlonxp and ati radeon is ok. The solution is on the video options.
You can try this:
monitor type: 16KHZ CGA arcade monitor
Pixel clock: high
Driver: Framebuffer Console
nerest mode: vsync
clac modes: none
strech option: none
And another important thing: ask at the forum.

Hi Gore.
Im trying Piapara CD on my old 1GHz Celeron with 256MB RAM, Hanterax old arcade CGA monitor, JammASD interface and Matrox G200 but it freeze before advmenu. There is only short error message: "Unable to initialize video driver: No Fullscreen mode available"
I've generated CD with options:CGA arcade monitor, high pixel clock, pentium 3 optimization, Framebuffer console, Vsync calculate, no calculation and no stretching
I think you should try the DirectFB driver instead of Framebuffer. Also, change from vsync and best sync too.
It's up to you to discovery the best options for your vga card/arcade monitor combination.
Keep going.
I've tried many combinations (nVidia GF2, ATI Rage, S3Trio, Matrox G200 but I discovered another problem. There has to be something wrong with creating /etc/fb.modes file.
Piapara hangs on message "Creating /etc/fb.modes based on MAME.xml file".
After few second this process is killed for some uknown reason and this message follows: "... etc/rc.d/rc.S Line 109 :292 killed /usr/bin/lrmc /root/advmenu/MAME.xml $LRMC_MONITOR $LRMC_PCLOCK $LRMC_STRETCH $LRMC_CALCULATION -f > /etc/fb.modes
Error!
Setting a 640x480 60.00Hz video mode.
Hi,
Would it be possible to add support to grub4dos or pxe iso loading?
Indeed, today the livecd checks for the cd and will stop during the boot process.
Thanks,
Erwan.
Choudy, good evening.
You need at least 512MB of RAM to create the fb.modes file because MAME.xml file is too big! :(
Erwan, good evening.
I only have plans for usb disk boot (aka pendrive).
Thank Gore for your support, but I have another issues.
I've increased amount of RAM and now Piapara 0.134 or 0.136 is able to run (Matrox via fbcon, ATI via directfb). Advmenu runs - OK, I can see more games in list than I've burned into image and can't switch to different view by Tab key or Space. If I try to load a game, picture is immedieately compressed to half of screen. I see whole game only in this area (also Tab key menu is deformed in horizontal way). Little helps only if a change pixel ratio.
Hello Choudy, good evening.
The RAM problem will be fixed when I create the modelines with PIAPARA LiveCD Generator instead of each boot time, but only at a new release.
To change options at AdvanceMenu, you should use the ScrollLock key to unlock/lock the options.
About the image, if you can, you should use the DirectFB with yuy support first. Remember to use high pixel clock too and to use some stretch option. An integer option should be nice.

Thanks for tips Gore.
I will try it.
I would by nice, if there was simple text boot splash screen with short timeout with list of changeable parameters which is written in syslinux.cfg file (ideally mapped on F1-F12 keys like in some distribution) for testing Piapara live. Now I don't want to burn new CD if I make a small change in configuration so i break boot procees by ESC and write parameters for syslinux in prompt directly (linux LRMC_SDLDRIVER=directfb LRMC_CALCULATION=-z etc.). But this is little impractical and takes some time if you want to test some combination of configurations and graphical cards. In this case you will need only 2 CD, one for testing and one with parametrs directly written for definitive functional arcade machine.
Hello Choudy, good morning.
Great idea! With this, people can find your best configuration quickly. I did that with grub loader in the first releases also, but I need to find a better way to do that at this time.
Also, always use CD-RW or DVD-RW. It's save money and PIAPARA LiveCD releases always come with new features.
Thanks for you help.
Finally!!!
I have to add line "aspect 4:3" under fulscreen section of mame.ini file and now everything run smooth.
Thanks Gore for tips an support.
Hi Gore,
I didn't try to boot piapara CD but had a look inside to see how you make things work.
Just some random thoughts about what I noticed :
- it seems that your distro isn't much generic, a lot of stuff from the computer it is built upon can be found in the linux tree.
You may want to do a little cleanup in the /dev dir so that all that belongs to your ibm laptop doesn't get there.
- same thing in etc, the group and passwd files are full of unused entries, and the locale would be more generic if it was en_US instead of pt_BR (or maybe include more locales ?).
- the kernel config and modules match your pc, it may be better to make a modular kernel with no default and all modules available as it's done on some distros live CDs, to increase compatibility with other hardware (and not leave traces of your pc hw too ;)
- one thing that strikes me is you set the default frame buffer mode to 640x480, isn't that too high for a CGA monitor ? Better set it lower to be on the safe side ?
Other than that, I find piapara quite nice.
I think too that linux with sdlmame on directFB is THE way to go for an arcade OS, so congratulations and best wishes for your next releases.
Greetings from France !

Barbu, good afternoon.
Reply 1: this is not important at this moment and it's only a cleanup, without performance impact. Also, udev creates a lot of devices, if they are present in your computer. So, it's perfect for now.
Reply 2: udev daemon need the group and passwd files. I'll correct the locale but I'll not include more locales, only US because it's more generic.
Reply 3: the kernel config don't match my pc. It's compiled for a simple pentium i585 with smp support, not more than this. Also, all necessary drivers for ide/sata/scsi, sound, video, input devices and network support are included and compiled into kernel to be simple! All other are disabled.
Reply 4: it's not a real 640x480, it's a 640x232 or something like that.
I'm now creating my new cabinet from zero and working with a new version of PIAPARA interface too, so I'll update PIAPARA LiveCD only when I finish this projects.

Hi Gore,
Thanks for the answers.
Good luck for your cab building and Have Fun !

Hi Gore.
Piapara live CD now works fine for me, but there is little issue. AdvanceMenu shows me some games that I didn't save into "roms" folder. For example I 've burned CD only with mk.zip punisher.zip and dkong.zip, but in AdvanceMenu I can see all revisions and world versions of theese games and some other games which can't be run (grey font in list)
Choudy, good evening!
About AdvanceMenu, you should try the options located at advmenu folder inside your harddisk or pendrive/penkey. If I remember, I set AdvanceMenu to look for merged sets and to show all parents/clones. It's very usefull for me. :)
Hi,
i am an old user of advanceCD, now trying to use Piapara live CD on my arcade monitor. I burned a CD with a couple of roms; when the java interface pop up, i select the CGA option (the one for arcade monitors), but the burned CD doesn't force my video card to 15KHz. I tryied it on my laptop (i know from advancecd that, when forced, the monitor reports “imput out of normal range” and shows nothing and i have a deformed image with mixed colors, but definitely an image.
Just to toy a little, i also try to set the “US NTSC TV” option, but i had the same result... what am i missing?
I may be in the wrong place for this post so sorry.I would like to move up to .139 mame is this possible and how?
Thank you very much.
You are doing a good job!
I have 2 questions:
- Can we install Piapara into hard disk?
- Can we replace advmenu with "lemon launcher"? My tft is 7 inches, and lemon launcher is much better for low resolutions.
